The rain poured, but that did not deter the participants in this year’s 5th Annual Anderson Golf Classic at the Fredericksburg Country Club on June 22nd, 2018.

Anderson Golf Classic

All teams arrived in the morning for registration, sponsored gift bags and breakfast. The teams teed off and the competition began with only a short delay. The tournament finished up around 1 pm, followed by a delicious lunch which the golfers enjoyed during the awards and raffle ceremony.

Awards were given to the longest drive and closest to the pin for a few holes which were sponsored by some of our guests. There were a few fun competitions at this year’s classic, because who doesn’t like a little friendly competition? The winners lucked out with this year’s prizes! Prizes included golfing equipment, Yeti coolers and a Big Green Egg with EGGcessories!

All of the proceeds for this year’s Classic are being donated to Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office program, Fight Against Heroin and Opioid Addiction. Captain Chuck Carey and 1st Sgt. Murdock Woodard of Spotsylvania County spoke about their program during the event and took questions from the audience. At the end of the ceremony, awards for the top three teams were presented followed by a gracious speech made by Mark Anderson.

The Anderson family, which has been affected personally by this epidemic, like so many other local families, hope to bring awareness to all about the dangers of opioid addiction through the Fight Against Heroin and Opioid Addiction program. Politicians, law enforcement officers and public health officials have tried to stem the growing tide of opioid overdoses. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office plans to use these funds to facilitate awareness, education, and provide support for our area.
As with much of our nation, more and more Virginians have become addicted to these drugs and many have died. According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, opioids have claimed the lives of more than 2,500 people in Virginia. The number of opioid overdoses in Virginia has risen steadily over those years with 764 people having died in the last year, 325 people having died from heroin overdoses alone.
The Anderson Companies and family are incredibly appreciative for all of the generous donations. Not only did our participants donate when joining the event, but they participated in our raffles, donated gift items for all participants, purchased event polo shirts, donated gifts for the award ceremony, and some even returned their prizes for proceeds to be awarded back for such a worthy cause.

Thank you again to all who participated to make this year’s Classic one to remember!

We had a great time at the Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival!

We would like to thank all who came out to the Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival on Saturday, August 26, 2017. The weather was beautiful and there was a great turn out! Joe Haynes, author of Virginia Barbecue: A History, joined us. He grilled and barbecued up some delicious samples for all who stopped by our tent. MOINK balls, pulled pork, and peach cobbler – all made on the Big Green Egg!

Operations Coordinator, Stephanie Pruett and Sales & Service Manager, Brian Stanley, handed out samples and wowed the crowd with their Big Green Egg knowledge. Some freebies at our tent were koozies, wrist bands, and BGE recipe books.

Did you enjoy the samples? Try making them yourself with these simple recipes!

Virginia-style Barbecued Pork on the Big Green Egg

1 8-pound pork butt

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons coarse ground black pepper

1 tablespoon mild paprika

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

Bring your Big Green Egg to 275 – 290 degrees Fahrenheit with the place setter installed. Use hickory chunks for smoke.

Make the Virginia-style barbecue rub by thoroughly mixing the salt, pepper, paprika and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Apply a light coat of unsalted butter along with a few sprinkles of vinegar to the entire meat side surface of the pork butt. Follow that with a medium coat of rub.

Barbecue the pork uncovered in the Big Green Egg at 275 to 290 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 hours. After 3 hours, tightly wrap the pork butt in two layers of aluminum foil and return it to the smoker. When the pork is tender, after about 3 to 4 more hours, remove it from the smoker and let it rest for 30 minutes. The internal temperature of the pork butt should be at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, don’t go by temperature alone; tenderness is the true guide. Use the barbecue to make sandwiches topped with coleslaw and a little Virginia-style barbecue sauce. Recipes for the sauces from the festival can be found in the book Virginia Barbecue: A History. Serves 12 to 15 people.

MOINK Balls

Moo (beef meatball) + Oink (bacon) = MOINK

1 package of pre-cooked beef meatballs

Bacon

Black Pepper & Cayenne Pepper

Barbecue sauce

Toothpicks

Big Green Egg with the place setter at 325 degrees F

Cut the bacon into lengths just long enough to make one wrap around a meatball with a little over hang that will be pierced by the toothpick to hold it in place. Wrap the meatballs with the bacon, stick a toothpick in to hold the bacon in place and season with the black pepper. The cayenne is optional. If you use it, use as little or as much as you like.

Put the MOINK balls on your Big Green Egg and close the lid. Let the MOINK balls cook until the bacon is done and is as crispy as you like. The internal temperature of the meats shouldn’t be less than 165F. Using a basting brush, apply a little barbecue sauce to the MOINK balls and let them cook for about another 5 minutes to allow the barbecue sauce to caramelize. Remove from the Big Green Egg and serve.

Big Green Egg Peach Cobbler

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup self-rising flour

2 cups sugar (divided into 3/4 cup each)

1/4 tsp salt

1 cup milk or buttermilk

4 cups peaches, peeled and sliced (fresh, frozen or canned & drained)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp nutmeg

Bring the Big Green Egg to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with the place setter installed. Melt the butter in an 8-quart Dutch Oven or 11″ x 13″ disposable aluminum pan or a 12” cast iron skillet that’s been placed in the BGE.

Mix flour, 1 cup of the sugar and salt in a bowl. Add the milk or buttermilk and stir just until all ingredients are mixed. Pour the batter into the pan over the melted butter. DO NOT STIR.

In a saucepan, bring the peaches, the remaining cup of sugar, the lemon juice and the spices to a simmer over medium high-heat long enough to melt the sugar. Pour this mixture into the dutch over or aluminum pan or skillet (whichever one you are using) over the batter. DO NOT STIR.

Cook the cobbler in the BGE for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the BGE and let the cobbler cool until warm before serving.

We want to thank everyone who attended the Annual Anderson Christmas Party on Thursday, December 15th, 2016. Surrounded by all of the Anderson employees and their loved ones, we had a wonderful time at The Inn at the Old Silk Mill located in Downtown Fredericksburg.

We also would like to thank Karen Jonas and Tim Bray for the beautiful music. Jonas’ new album, Country Songs, is out now! The Sunken Well Tavern provided the delicious dinner buffet. The buffet included crab dip, pigs in a blanket, sliders, mac & cheese, BBQ chicken, filet mignon, salad, collard greens, and crab cakes! Even though everyone was full from all of the tasty food, they still had room for dessert… cake from Paul’s Bakery!

After everyone ate, Mark Anderson, the President of The Anderson Companies, thanked all of the employees for their hard work this year. Mark then called out the raffle winners, each winner chose their prize from the gift table.

The Senior Vice President, Nicole Cameli, spoke after Mark. She expressed how thankful she is to be a part of the Anderson Companies and thanked the employees for making 2016 a great year.

Just when everyone thought the Christmas Party could not get any better, it was time to play Left Center Right! The lucky winner was Todd, an Anderson Leonarkis Construction employee.

After Left Center Right, the Administrative Assistant, Jan LaVan, announced some more winners of the raffle. This time, the winners chose between three empty boxes numbered 1, 2, and 3. The first person called won a Roku TV, the second called won a flat screen 48 inch TV, and the third called won a Yeti Cooler!

After the last raffle winners were called, Mark thanked everyone for attending, and that was a wrap! Between the delicious food, presents, and good company, it was evident that everyone had a great time at the Christmas Party. Anderson Oil Company, Anderson Propane Service, and Anderson Leonarkis Construction appreciate all the hard work and dedication from our employees and it was a pleasure to return the favor with gratitude, fun games, and presents.

On behalf of The Anderson Companies, we want to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year! 2016 was a spectacular year and we look forward to an even better 2017!
