The Anderson Companies 2020 Annual Donation: Zoe Freedom Center

2020 has been a turbulent year for many people in many different ways. As our world learns to navigate through these unprecedented times, The Anderson Companies knew it was important, now more than ever, to give back to our community.

For over 5 years, we have hosted an annual golf tournament with all proceeds donated to various charities. This year with safety in mind, we made the difficult yet important decision to cancel our event. Although we couldn’t raise money through a fun day of golf, our team didn’t let disappointment cloud the most important part of it all: supporting our community.

When it came time to choose an organization to support, the answer seemed clear. According to the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program, suspected overdoses nationally jumped 18% in March, 29% in April, and 42% in May. These statistics and the Anderson family’s personal experience with addiction and overdose lead them right to Zoe Freedom Center.

Zoe Freedom Center is a non-profit organization in Fredericksburg, VA that strives to educate and help those suffering with addiction find freedom. Husband and wife duo, Mark and Dana Brown, founded Zoe Freedom Center after Dana’s remarkable journey placed this mission on their hearts. In the past year, their organization has helped countless in our community and been a positive force in spreading awareness about addiction.

Service Technician Job Description

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Our service technicians perform installations, maintenance and repairs including safety checks of propane systems and appliances safely for our customers. They may also repair and perform maintenance of propane tanks and other equipment. Our technicians strictly adhere to government regulations and Anderson Propane’s operating procedures while working independently or in a team environment to offer the best possible customer experience, fostering strong relationships that build trust in our company.  In addition, our technicians serve as ambassadors providing hands-on explanations and technical guidance of any new or updated products and services to our customers while upholding the ideals and standards of Anderson Propane.

Being organized is essential to being an effective service technician where the day may consist of varied tasks, installations, training and much more.  Our technicians prepare service records, logs, vehicle and equipment maintenance records and other related documents accurately, neatly, and provide them to administration in a timely manner.  Maintaining complete and up-to-date files on parts manuals, service manuals, and service bulletins as well as adequate parts inventory is also required. We ask that our service technicians maintain a clean and orderly work area by keeping tools, equipment and supplies in proper places.  Performing work safely as to not cause harm to yourself, customers and property, co-workers, equipment, or inventory is a necessity in this positon where the technician may utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required. We ask that all operation of equipment and vehicles is done according to Anderson Propane’s policy and government regulations including OSHA regulations, Anderson Propane Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards and other work rules and policies. 

This position will require the candidate to be familiar with and able to use mobile devices including phones, GPS equipment, tablets, and printers allowing them to access documents and information quickly and easily as well as communicate with staff via phone or electronic mail and messaging. 

Our service technicians will work with customers to determine the scope of service needed, recommend the right product or direction to solve the customer’s problem.   Monitoring industry products, participating in specialized training, certification courses is also essential to understanding our customer’s needs and available options. We encourage our employees to learn and develop techniques to enhance job performance and to stay current on industry safety and operational standards.

Lastly, in this position, the candidate will need to effectively operate Anderson Propane Service motor vehicles in compliance with government regulations and our company’s motor vehicle safety policy. It will be required to properly utilize and maintain equipment and vehicles, including routine preventive maintenance and repairs.

This position requires a valid Virginia Driver’s License.  You will be required to complete our company Motor Vehicle Report Consent Form or provide a copy of your Motor Vehicle Record prior to the interview process.  All service technician’s driving records are monitored regularly to maintain standards of Anderson Propane’s driver policy.

Education and Experience

Aside from a social and positive personality, service technicians should be self-starting and a proactive problem solver, since not every day is the same and the workplace setting is constantly changing.  Other important experience and abilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • High school diploma, general education degree or equivalent required
  • Requires two (2) or more years of experience with installation and repair of propane based heating systems, equipment and appliances.
  • Requires two (2) or more years of experience driving with valid Virginia driver’s license.  Current Motor Vehicle Report detailing driving record within company standards
  • General knowledge of tools and home construction recommended
  • Effective knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and/or pipe fitting repair and maintenance
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to calmly and effectively work with time constraints and deadlines
  • Able to demonstrate teamwork and flexibility to meet customer and business needs
  • Calibrate equipment to proper settings. Effectively utilize mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other specialized skills and the appropriate tools as determined by the job.
  • Read and effectively interpret electrical and mechanical blueprints, manuals, engineering specifications, diagrams, meters, gauges, and control panels to perform installations and repair equipment.
  • Gather and analyze information to diagnose malfunctions and troubleshoot systems.
  • Depending upon job specifications, a service technician may load and deliver supplies of propane according to standard operating procedures. Handle and lift canisters into truck and/or utilize load hose, meters, gauges, and terminal controls for bulk fuel loading (top load and bottom load). Obtain distribution of fuel from Anderson’s plant facility.

Work Environment

Performs essential job functions in various environments, including: driving a commercial motor vehicle and working at a customer site, outdoors where one may not be protected from weather conditions, and in a warehouse environment subject to seasonal temperatures and humidity.

Frequently exposed to hazards including:

Heating oil, kerosene, diesel, gasoline, butane, and/or liquid propane, and related odors and fumes

Moving mechanical parts and vehicles

Noise levels where hearing protection is optional per PPE Plan

Dust, wet surfaces, vibrations, and electrical current

Schedule requirements will vary during peak and off-peak seasons. Extended hours may be required to provide 24/7 on-call or Emergency Service Standby. Ability to report to work on time and in adverse weather conditions is required.

Physical Activities & Requirements

This role requires continuous physical activity to perform essential job functions for the duration of the shift.  Our service technicians continuously bend, crouch, stoop; drive motorized equipment; finger and handle controls, tools and equipment; reach with arms and hands for extended periods while driving and operating equipment; stand and walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces; utilize hands in repetitive motion; utilize eye/hand/foot coordination; twist back and neck. One may frequently balance, kneel, stack, sweep or climb steps throughout the shift.

This role may require the individual to pull, push, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds. Occasionally one may pull, push, lift, and carry 80-100 pounds with assistance. Depending upon location, our technicians may pull or push propane tanks (170+ pounds) utilizing handcart and move large equipment for installation.

Our applicants must be able to hear vehicle and equipment sounds, co-workers and radio. Employees of Anderson Propane must be able to speak to co-workers and customers regarding operations and safety. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Starting Salary:

The starting wage for this position is $17-$22 per hour, but based on experience level; wages will be determined for the full-time position.  Health, Life and Disability insurance are available along with other medical benefits and 401K retirement options.  New employees are awarded paid holidays immediately with vacation and sick leave granted after time employed.

The Customer Service Representative attracts potential customers by answering product and service questions; suggesting information about other products and services. Process orders, prepare correspondences and fulfill customer needs to ensure customer satisfaction.
