An Artist in the Family

Vernon Anderson, more affectionately known as Van, is the second eldest of the Anderson siblings and has worked for the Anderson Companies for more than 30 years. His contribution to our work is invaluable, from helping to run one of our convenience stores back in the day to currently helping customers refill their cylinder tanks and back office daily tasks.  However, his most visible contribution is the beautiful artwork throughout our building.  His journey into art started in the early ‘70s during his primary education. Since then Van has been on his own, learning his craft, and experimenting in many facets of art. Van has strong preferences for the bright and boldness in colors. It is his hope to share color and positive energy through his art with the world and to help make it a better place.  Van has certainly enriched the lives of his family, coworkers and friends with his wonderful personality and beautiful paintings.
He works with a range of mediums including acrylics, alcohol ink and watercolor. He will paint on most anything, from canvas and tiles to porcelain objects and seashells. Much of his work is abstract, but he enjoys painting landscapes too. His work evolves during the process and he hopes that the viewer will find their own imagery in his pieces. An artist shows their true self through their craft and he is always working outside of his comfort zone to better his work.

Van has had his work displayed in many locations throughout the area. You may have seen him painting in the windows on Caroline street when Free Birds was across from Goolrick’s or maybe you have had the opportunity to see his work displayed at the Ponshop when they have their annual Remixed Vinyl Album Art Show.  He is also a regular at Tinsel Town hosted by the Sunken Well each December.  However, the best place to see his work and catch him creating now is at Darbytown Art Studio on Charles Street in downtown Fredericksburg.

Darbytown Art Studio and its Artists

Darbytown is a quaint studio which opened up earlier this year with a collection of wonderful artists.  Started by Jeannie Ellis as a place to escape and experiment with art, she found that the space was a bit big for her and could use some company.  Through a mutual friend, she found that Van was looking for a new studio and the great cooperative space began.  Not long afterwards, Van found Amanda Carter and thus began the newest edition to our area’s collection of art and craftsman studios.

Jeannie Ellis, Van Anderson and Amanda Carter

Jeannie Ellis is a beginner in art, but you wouldn’t know it to see her paintings.  She will tell you that she took one watercolor class in 1998 and was done.  Then out of the blue and with her love of nature, she wanted to try her hand at expressing the beauty in her surroundings.   What she is developing is a beautiful meticulous process in acrylic and watercolor painting within the last year.  To counteract the tedious detailed pieces of birds and other wildlife, she lets loose on the abstract acrylic pouring.  She will even comment that she “feels a pour coming on” after completing one of her more detailed pieces. These pours are just as beautiful as the others and allow you to see the tranquility of her happy place, a birds-eye-view of ocean waters.

Amanda Carter took up painting more than 8 years ago.  While living in Africa she developed her impressionistic style and over the years uses it in her landscape paintings.  This is matched along with her very detailed oil paintings of cows, cats, and still lifes.  As Amanda’s daily life wound down and she could focus on the better part of life after retirement, she is more vigorous in her art which even includes modern vivid and african influenced quilting.  She uses the brightest colors which she says may have been influenced by her time living in both the Virgin Islands and Africa or her failing eyesight, she can’t decide.  Either way, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the fluffy clouds floating over a seascape or smile at the cute cows grazing in a field (she loves cows).

Darbytown has since expanded after the three of them joined forces and now includes  Tronja, a contemporary artist illustrator.  They also have a jeweler and another tenant starting at the beginning of the new year.

They love working and painting together in this shared space.  It gives them a chance to receive constructive criticism, encouragement to try other techniques or subjects to paint and inspiration to create new works.  None of them got into art for the money, but have found in this studio, an appreciation for the hard work that goes into a piece and the joy of the piece being sold to a loving home.

December’s First Friday Event

Every First Friday in downtown Fredericksburg the local art and pottery galleries have their opening receptions for their new exhibits. Many of the other local businesses are also open late and have special activities.

Darbytown premiered their gallery during last month’s First Friday and has made their studio a must to stop in and see the new works each month.  December’s First Friday is a great time to go see what they have made just in time for the holidays.  Van has painted beautiful ornaments and Amanda has a fantastic collection of small cat portraits.  But, all of them have created several small and larger works that would make that perfect personal gift for a friend or loved one.

If you miss out on First Friday, do not fret, their gallery is usually open Monday through Saturday from Noon to 5pm.  Plus, you can see and purchase their work during a few different shows this month.  Van will be at the Sunken Well for their annual Tinsel Town, December 7th and on December 12th, he is participating in the Holiday Pop-Up Art Shop at the Colonial Tavern.  You can also see works by both Van and Amanda currently at Lizz’s Creative Juices.

Don’t forget to check them out online and see what other upcoming events where the artists are participating:  https://www.facebook.com/DarbytownArt/

Thank you for visiting us at the Fredericksburg Fall Home & Craft Festival!

This past weekend, October 21st – 22nd, 2017, Anderson Propane Service and Anderson Leonarkis Construction had a blast at the Fredericksburg Fall Home & Craft Festival that took place at the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center!

All of us here at Anderson Propane and Anderson Leonarkis Construction are beyond happy with the turnout at the 2017 Fredericksburg Fall Home & Craft Festival! At the festival, we had a nice range of the products we sell including a Big Green Egg. We showcased products that work for natural gas, wood and pellets in addition to propane, as well as, vented and vent-free items. Our experts were on hand to discuss heating and hearth needs from product selection to installation and service.

Jorge Leonarkis and Chris Hardin from Anderson Leonarkis also had a great time this weekend. Both of them were ready to share their knowledge in everything construction! They also stayed busy by handing out lots of free giveaways like beach balls, Frisbees, and lunch bags full of goodies. Future home builders stopped by their booth to view pictures of their completed work and view potential plans. They also got to chat with them about their new home construction and residential remodeling plans. We take pride in providing exceptional customer service and quality workmanship.

We had a great time at the Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival!

We would like to thank all who came out to the Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival on Saturday, August 26, 2017. The weather was beautiful and there was a great turn out! Joe Haynes, author of Virginia Barbecue: A History, joined us. He grilled and barbecued up some delicious samples for all who stopped by our tent. MOINK balls, pulled pork, and peach cobbler – all made on the Big Green Egg!

Operations Coordinator, Stephanie Pruett and Sales & Service Manager, Brian Stanley, handed out samples and wowed the crowd with their Big Green Egg knowledge. Some freebies at our tent were koozies, wrist bands, and BGE recipe books.

Did you enjoy the samples? Try making them yourself with these simple recipes!

Virginia-style Barbecued Pork on the Big Green Egg

1 8-pound pork butt

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons coarse ground black pepper

1 tablespoon mild paprika

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

Bring your Big Green Egg to 275 – 290 degrees Fahrenheit with the place setter installed. Use hickory chunks for smoke.

Make the Virginia-style barbecue rub by thoroughly mixing the salt, pepper, paprika and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Apply a light coat of unsalted butter along with a few sprinkles of vinegar to the entire meat side surface of the pork butt. Follow that with a medium coat of rub.

Barbecue the pork uncovered in the Big Green Egg at 275 to 290 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 hours. After 3 hours, tightly wrap the pork butt in two layers of aluminum foil and return it to the smoker. When the pork is tender, after about 3 to 4 more hours, remove it from the smoker and let it rest for 30 minutes. The internal temperature of the pork butt should be at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, don’t go by temperature alone; tenderness is the true guide. Use the barbecue to make sandwiches topped with coleslaw and a little Virginia-style barbecue sauce. Recipes for the sauces from the festival can be found in the book Virginia Barbecue: A History. Serves 12 to 15 people.

MOINK Balls

Moo (beef meatball) + Oink (bacon) = MOINK

1 package of pre-cooked beef meatballs

Bacon

Black Pepper & Cayenne Pepper

Barbecue sauce

Toothpicks

Big Green Egg with the place setter at 325 degrees F

Cut the bacon into lengths just long enough to make one wrap around a meatball with a little over hang that will be pierced by the toothpick to hold it in place. Wrap the meatballs with the bacon, stick a toothpick in to hold the bacon in place and season with the black pepper. The cayenne is optional. If you use it, use as little or as much as you like.

Put the MOINK balls on your Big Green Egg and close the lid. Let the MOINK balls cook until the bacon is done and is as crispy as you like. The internal temperature of the meats shouldn’t be less than 165F. Using a basting brush, apply a little barbecue sauce to the MOINK balls and let them cook for about another 5 minutes to allow the barbecue sauce to caramelize. Remove from the Big Green Egg and serve.

Big Green Egg Peach Cobbler

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup self-rising flour

2 cups sugar (divided into 3/4 cup each)

1/4 tsp salt

1 cup milk or buttermilk

4 cups peaches, peeled and sliced (fresh, frozen or canned & drained)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/8 tsp nutmeg

Bring the Big Green Egg to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with the place setter installed. Melt the butter in an 8-quart Dutch Oven or 11″ x 13″ disposable aluminum pan or a 12” cast iron skillet that’s been placed in the BGE.

Mix flour, 1 cup of the sugar and salt in a bowl. Add the milk or buttermilk and stir just until all ingredients are mixed. Pour the batter into the pan over the melted butter. DO NOT STIR.

In a saucepan, bring the peaches, the remaining cup of sugar, the lemon juice and the spices to a simmer over medium high-heat long enough to melt the sugar. Pour this mixture into the dutch over or aluminum pan or skillet (whichever one you are using) over the batter. DO NOT STIR.

Cook the cobbler in the BGE for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the BGE and let the cobbler cool until warm before serving.

If you missed us at the Cigar, Bourbon and Beer Festival, don’t forget to stop by Anderson Propane Service’s showroom and take a look at our great selection of Big Green Egg items and Eggcessories!

The 2017 Anderson Golf Classic was a success!

The rain held off, making it a beautiful day to host our 4th Annual Anderson Golf Classic at the Fredericksburg Country Club on June 16th, 2017. The day started off with registration and breakfast. After breakfast, tee off was right on time, with the tournament finishing up around 1 pm. Golfers enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch during the awards and raffle ceremony.

Awards were given to the longest drive at several holes which were sponsored by some of our guests. There were a few fun competitions at this year’s classic, because who doesn’t like a little friendly competition? The winners lucked out with this year’s prizes! Prizes included a portable grill, wine gift baskets, golfing equipment, and a Large Big Green Egg with EGGcessories!  At the end of the ceremony, awards for the top three teams were presented followed by a gracious speech made by Mark Anderson.

All of the proceeds for this year’s Classic are being donated to  Micah Ecumenical Ministries. Micah is a Christ-centered community supporting people experiencing chronic homelessness and identifying pathways to sustainable housing.

The ministry at Micah seeks to provide access to assistance resources for the many obstacles that the chronically homeless face.   Advocates from Micah attended to bring awareness to Micah’s mission and their vision for the future with participants.

We are incredibly appreciative for all of the generous donations. Not only did our participants donate when joining the event, but they participated in our raffles, purchased event polo shirts, donated gifts for the award ceremony, and some even returned their prizes for proceeds to be awarded back to Micah.

Thank you again to all who participated and all who volunteered to make this year’s Classic our best yet!

We want to thank everyone who attended the Annual Anderson Christmas Party on Thursday, December 15th, 2016. Surrounded by all of the Anderson employees and their loved ones, we had a wonderful time at The Inn at the Old Silk Mill located in Downtown Fredericksburg.

We also would like to thank Karen Jonas and Tim Bray for the beautiful music. Jonas’ new album, Country Songs, is out now! The Sunken Well Tavern provided the delicious dinner buffet. The buffet included crab dip, pigs in a blanket, sliders, mac & cheese, BBQ chicken, filet mignon, salad, collard greens, and crab cakes! Even though everyone was full from all of the tasty food, they still had room for dessert… cake from Paul’s Bakery!

After everyone ate, Mark Anderson, the President of The Anderson Companies, thanked all of the employees for their hard work this year. Mark then called out the raffle winners, each winner chose their prize from the gift table.

The Senior Vice President, Nicole Cameli, spoke after Mark. She expressed how thankful she is to be a part of the Anderson Companies and thanked the employees for making 2016 a great year.

Just when everyone thought the Christmas Party could not get any better, it was time to play Left Center Right! The lucky winner was Todd, an Anderson Leonarkis Construction employee.

Todd, the lucky winner of left center right.

Todd, the winner of Left Center Right.

After Left Center Right, the Administrative Assistant, Jan LaVan, announced some more winners of the raffle. This time, the winners chose between three empty boxes numbered 1, 2, and 3. The first person called won a Roku TV, the second called won a flat screen 48 inch TV, and the third called won a Yeti Cooler!

After the last raffle winners were called, Mark thanked everyone for attending, and that was a wrap! Between the delicious food, presents, and good company, it was evident that everyone had a great time at the Christmas Party. Anderson Oil Company, Anderson Propane Service, and Anderson Leonarkis Construction appreciate all the hard work and dedication from our employees and it was a pleasure to return the favor with gratitude, fun games, and presents.

On behalf of The Anderson Companies, we want to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year! 2016 was a spectacular year and we look forward to an even better 2017!

Here at Anderson Propane Service, we are very animal friendly. If you stop by our office, there is a pretty good chance you might see a dog wandering around here, or even a pig! None of our employees miss work if they cannot find someone to help take care of their animals, they just bring them into work for the day! A couple of employees here recently took a trip to the Fredericksburg SPCA to donate some goodies for the animals that are waiting for their forever home.

Pictured below is our very own Philip Gouldman and Janet Hahn, and the Fredericksburg SPCA’s newest Volunteer Coordinator, Alison Carlin!

A picture of the goodies we donated to the Fredericksburg SPCA

Alison gave Janet a tour of the facility. She got to meet all of the sweet, loving dogs and cats that are patiently waiting to find a home. Janet is a big animal lover, so naturally, she wished she could take all of them home with her!

On behalf of all of us here at Anderson Propane, we want to thank the Fredericksburg SPCA for allowing us to stop by. More importantly, we are grateful for everything they do to help all of the precious dogs and cats get the love they deserve and find their forever home. We hope to make a visit again very soon!

Anderson Propane’s Adoption Stories

A couple of the employees here at Anderson Propane have adopted their pets from the Fredericksburg SPCA. Here are their stories:

Sofie

Bekah Constien and her husband, Cody, recently adopted a dog from the Fredericksburg SPCA. They both had wanted a dog for awhile. Instead of getting a puppy, they thought it would be best to give an older dog a home. They immediately went to the Fredericksburg SPCA. When they saw Sofie (at the time her name was Amaretto) they both fell in love! She was the sweetest dog they had ever met. After spending some time with her, they had no hesitation in choosing to adopt her.

Sofie had only been at the SPCA for a little less than a week, but she had been living in a shelter in North Carolina for over a month. Just one day before getting euthanized, the Fredericksburg SPCA rescued Sofie along with four other dogs from the same shelter in North Carolina. Bekah and Cody could not be happier with the new addition to their family. They hope to adopt many more shelter animals in the future and give them the love they so deserve!

Sophie

Stephanie Pruett adopted her cat from the Fredericksburg SPCA. She went to a few different places and met some cats, but did not feel any of them were right for her. When she thought the search was over and began feeling disappointed, she remembered the Fredericksburg SPCA! When Stephanie got to the SPCA, she had a good feeling. She informed the staff that she was looking for a black cat. They told her they had just rescued two cats that were sick, but one was well enough to be adopted… and it was a black cat! Stephanie could not resist this precious kitty! She knew right away this was the one.

At the time, the cat’s name was Tootsie. Stephanie did not think that name was fitting. So, she renamed her Sophie! (No, Stephanie or Bekah did not plan to name their pets the same name. Just coincidence!) Sophie now has a loving family and a forever home where she plays and takes naps whenever she pleases!

Bekah and Stephanie both could not imagine life without their pets! They are part of the family now. Both Sofie and Sophie finally have the loving homes they deserve. If you are thinking about adding a new addition to your family, please consider adopting a dog or cat from the Fredericksburg SPCA.

If you have already given a shelter pet a forever home, please share your adoption story with us on our Anderson Propane Service, Inc. Facebook page!
